Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The proliferation of fake news has emerged as a global challenge, undermining trust in traditional and digital media, influencing public opinion, and disrupting societal harmony. In Nigeria, the issue is particularly pronounced, given the country's socio-political complexities and diverse media landscape (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2024). Print media, traditionally regarded as a credible source of information, has a critical role in countering the spread of fake news by providing verified and accurate content (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). In Potiskum Local Government, Yobe State, a region characterized by political sensitivities and ethnic diversity, the impact of fake news is deeply felt, exacerbating tensions and fueling misinformation (Kareem et al., 2025). The effectiveness of print media in combating fake news lies in its adherence to journalistic ethics, rigorous editorial processes, and ability to reach diverse demographics, including rural populations with limited internet access. However, the rise of social media platforms, which often prioritize speed over accuracy, has created an environment where fake news can thrive, challenging the credibility and influence of print media (Usman & Aisha, 2024). This study seeks to analyze how print media in Potiskum combats fake news, focusing on its strategies, challenges, and overall effectiveness in fostering an informed society.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The surge in fake news presents significant challenges to societal cohesion, governance, and informed decision-making, especially in regions like Potiskum Local Government, Yobe State, where socio-political tensions are prevalent. While print media is often perceived as a credible source of information, its capacity to counteract the pervasive spread of fake news is under constant scrutiny (Adewale & Ibrahim, 2024). Fake news spreads rapidly through social media, fueled by its ease of access, lack of editorial oversight, and viral nature. This undermines the credibility of verified information disseminated by print media, creating a mistrust that impedes its role in combating misinformation (Mohammed & Garba, 2023). Additionally, print media in Potiskum faces logistical and financial challenges, such as limited distribution networks and declining readership, which hinder its ability to effectively reach rural populations. The lack of targeted strategies to address the specific sources and nature of fake news further complicates the issue. These challenges highlight a critical need for an in-depth analysis of print media's effectiveness in combating fake news within the context of Potiskum’s unique socio-political landscape.

By identifying effective strategies and highlighting challenges, the study offers valuable insights for media practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders in the fight against misinformation. It also emphasizes the importance of reinforcing journalistic ethics and enhancing public trust in traditional media as a reliable source of information. Furthermore, the findings contribute to the broader discourse on media resilience in the digital age, particularly in regions grappling with socio-political vulnerabilities. Ultimately, this research underscores the need for innovative approaches and collaborative efforts to strengthen print media's capacity to combat fake news and foster an informed society.
